Multiculturalism Policy in Canada: Exploring the Dispute with Québec through Framing Analysis.
Hrynuik Breedon, Hannah Mae ; Jelínková, Marie (advisor) ; Jusić, Mirna (referee)
Multiculturalism has been an official federal government policy in Canada since 1971 and is strongly associated with the country. However, from its inception, it has been met with strong criticism and opposition in the predominantly French-speaking province of Québec. While the long history of French-English conflicts in Canada has been explored, there is a paucity of comprehensive literature that focuses on the resurgence of this particular dispute in the last decade. This period includes Québec's adoption of several new, high profile, and controversial policies and laws that mark a rejection of the federal policy. To help fill this gap, and develop a more specific and contemporary description of this dispute, this paper uses frame analysis as a lens through which to examine a range of sources including news articles, government documents, press releases, speeches and interviews. Through this analysis six frames used by federal and provincial actors are identified and discussed: "Unique Cultural Preservation", "Québecois as Dominant Culture" and "Provincial Autonomy" on one side; and "Cultural Diversity and Pluralism", "Accommodation" and "National Unity" on the other. The findings reveal that the dispute is rooted in a historic struggle for power between the province and the federal government...
The construction of man and society in textbooks for primary schools
Kroneislová, Adéla ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (advisor) ; Soukup, Martin (referee)
The aim of this bachelor thesis The Construction of Man and Society in Textbooks for Primary Schools is to analyze and reconstruct the image of Czech national identity that is present in Czech textbooks for primary schools. The thesis is divided into three main parts: theory, methodology, and final research. The theoretical part includes the scientific framework of discursive analysis, the textbook text as a source of collective identity transmission, and the concepts of culture and understanding of the nation that are relevant for the reconstruction of the national identity which is transmitted to pupils during their studies. The method of linguistic discursive analysis is used to achieve the research goals. The chosen method enables the identification of the basic elements of the discourse. The research section details the research typologies and the findings that were made. Using the data obtained from the analysis of the textbooks, an image of Czech national identity is subsequently described and the main values on which Czech national identity is based are outlined. In the conclusion of the thesis, further possible approaches for extending the research are mentioned and the overall process of the thesis is summarized.
Personality and Work of Božena Němcová in Metodological Practice at Secondary School
KAPLANOVÁ, Kamila
In the theoretical part the diploma thesis focuses on the characteristics of life and work of Božena Němcová, as well as its classification with topical overview of methodological materials (such as reading-books, textbooks and exercise-books) used at the second level of elementary schools. The subject of interest in this theoretical part points out the work-systems and their comparison at selected primary schools. The crucial point of the practical part thesis deals with the description and the analysis of questionnaires, which are assembled especially for this research (opinion on Božena Němcová, comparison of the curriculum, appropriate literature for children), and further with the interviews of the teachers. The conclusion of the thesis attempts to outline the summary, as well as the analysis of gained results, on which basis it recommends a possible innovation in the methodological practice for a chosen topic.

Internationalism, resp. supranationalism, must not be above individual nations.
Dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1992
Křivánek, Adam ; Lovaš, Karol (advisor) ; Gulda, Jana (referee)
My bachelor thesis deals with the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1992. Its main part is a radio podcast with a total length of twenty-five minutes and fifty-two seconds, and it aims to bring the complex subject matter to generations born after the events of the early 1990s. In the output, however, I do not only focus on events closely associated with this particular historical period. Instead, from the position of a narrator, based on the knowledge of a high school student, I go through the history of the Czech and Slovak Republics. In doing so, I am looking in particular for the causes and consequences of the dissolution. But in order to avoid plain and boring narrative, my speech is supplemented by numerous archive records and background music. In addition, the podcast is interspersed with answers to my questions from the relevant experts. In an interview recorded especially for this thesis, a historian clarifies key historical contexts and a former high-ranking politician outlines the moods that moved society at the time. A theoretical section also accompanies the work. One of its purposes is to explain what the term podcast means and why I have chosen this particular format. Another is to place the relations between the Czech and Slovak nations in the necessary historical context. Thus, the...
Social and geographical aspects of support for and variability of nationalism in Czechia
Cihlář, Pavel ; Lepič, Martin (advisor) ; Suchánek, Jonáš (referee)
Czech nationalism is a phenomenon that formed Czech history and it is still forming the Czech identity and attitudes. Nevertheless, this term significantly disappeared from the Czech public debate, as if it no longer concerned the Czech nation. This bachelor thesis tries to go against the trend, it`s target is to introduce the Czech nation and nationalism, to define the factors that determine the nationalist attitudes, and the analysis of their spatial variability. To achieve the targets the thesis uses a statistical method of binary logistic regression which is used for monitoring the relationship between the proxy variable of nationalism and the independent variables which are the basic structural and attitude variables commonly used in nationalism research. Through these predictors, the two influential hypotheses explaining the support for nationalism are tested. The theory of "losers of globalization" supposes the conditionality in the economic status and the theory of "cultural backlash" based on a nativist ideology. The found statistic associations were further observed in a regional detail using regions defined on the base of two - many times observed spatial patterns, namely phantom`s borders and dichotomy of core-periphery, further according to their combination and also according to the...
Analysis of the problem of the transfer of Germans in the newspapers between 1945-1946
Gročková, Marie ; Štemberk, Jan (advisor) ; Cviklová, Lucie (referee)
For my diploma thesis I chose the topic: Analysis of the problematics of the expulsion of Germans in the period press of 1945-1946. In the first part of the thesis I will focus on the methodology and the chosen type of analysis. Then, in the theoretical background of my work, I will interpret the development of the relationship between the Czechs and the Germans, I will try to describe in detail when the first conflicts between the two nations began. In addition, I will deal with the expulsion of the Germans as such, as well as its phases, taking into account the establishment of the system of internment camps, the decrees of the president of the republic and the views of both nations on the issue. In the last chapter I will deal with the analysis of the press from 1945-1946. My aim will then be to describe the discourse of post-war Czechoslovakia regarding the expulsion of Germans, the attitude of the powers on an international scale, but also the visions of the future Czechoslovak Republic, as it was established by then political representation.
